Zelda's studio visit

Well, that was a wonderful visit. I always leave these Salons feeling nourished from our conversations. I feel that we are a good blend of personalities and points of view. We are all bringing our expertise and experience to the table and it seems to be working. Even when things get a little bumpy, we seem to self-correct. Thank you.

Thank you so much Zelda for showing us your beautiful, somewhat mythical and novel work! Your images and aesthetic are staying with me. Your house is gorgeous and your snacks maintained our high level of culinary expectations.

Welcome Peggy. Your insights and contribution to our dialogue are a welcome addition. You fit right in!

Here is a summary of our meeting. We discussed the following:

• We discussed the idea of meeting the first Sunday of each month. Unless there is a conflict with the date. let's keep this in mind as we continue to schedule.
  
• A possible group show at Stella Dottir. Most were in favor. Now, I will talk to Stella about this. Please check out the store next time you are downtown.
• Let's keep on the lookout for alternative spaces for future shows.
• I emphatically recommend listening to the Podcasts of What do Curators Want? See archives.
  
• Peggy highly recommends the Two Germany's show at LACMA.
• Craig and I both enjoyed the photo show at the Santa Barbara Museum.
• Judith mentioned her friend, artist Cheryl Klein. She has a wonderful work and teaching space on Motor and National. Judith, please find out more.
• Kate thought that we should have a meeting eventually devoted to Artists Statements. After a few more visits, we can schedule this.
• Missing from meeting: Beth and Clinton.
• The blog: Send me any info or listings that you would like published and I'll post it for you. You can always go back in the archives or post an immediate comment to anything previously posted. It's not perfect, but it functions.

Sooner rather than later

I am getting feedback (including my own internal naggings) that we should meet a little more frequently. I think this time was a little too stretched out.
I also think that we should occasionally meet in between studio visits for conversation designated for a specific topic.
So, we could schedule a dinner or snack-y event half way through a cycle.
I have some topics in mind. Please ruminate on some of your own. I know you have already.
I am looking forward to seeing you all. Also, unfortunately, Beth will not be able to make it to Zelda's crit. However, she will be next!

The Boom is over. Long live Art!

This article appeared in yesterday's New York Times (Sunday, February 15, 2009). You may find it interesting. I thought it was a thoughtful reflection on what's going on in the art market. Parts of it made me cheer, other parts evoked some prickly debate between Craig and I.
There was also another article discussing what artists have done historically when the economy was tanking. Check it out if you have time.

Tom Miller's studio visit

Thank you Tom for letting us in and showing us your work. I hope you found it to be thoughtful, useful and food for thought. I drove away thinking and thinking about your large painting in the back "gallery" and was inspired and a little jealous (the ultimate compliment!)
I really like the dynamic in the group. Everyone seemed to have good input and a desire to participate. I also liked the snacks.
So far, so good! I do think it would be nice over time to bring a smattering of additional people. Keep your eyes open for artists with whom you share a simpatico, or not, but someone whose work you respect.
