Great art spaces in Seattle
Hi Salonistas.
Craig and I just returned from Seattle. Aside from the beauty that is our 2 year old grandson, we were excited to see two great photo shows. We were excited about these two very different art spaces:
Pacific Northwest Photography Center
This was a great little space for our photographically inclined friends. We caught the last day of the "Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows" exhibit. This woman was a nanny for 40 years who took pictures of everyday life, with a haunting twist. She never printed a single one. Her 10,000 negatives were discovered and are now being exhibited around the country.
The space was intimate, very accessible, in a super fun neighborhood and was really energetic and filled with people. You could tell that it attracted a nice audience of folks who care about photography. The woman at the front desk was very open and helpful.

Henry Art Gallery
This is a fabulous museum/gallery at the University of Washington in Seattle. They have an impressive permanent collection and interesting and varied exhibits in all mediums. We flipped out over the exhibit "Out [o] fashion". The space was beautiful.
Karen: This place has the perfect room for your installation. I mean it. There was an interesting video projected in a great space that you could walk through or observe from above. This is a place that you should push like crazy to get into. It was meant for you!

March 17, 2013 Circle of support
Thank you everyone for a much needed renewal of the Art Salon good vibrations. I feel so encouraged by the kindness and intelligence that we each provide one another when we come together as a group.
It's a loud, lonely hallway when those inner voices rattle around. It always amazes me how cathartic and reassuring it can be to share our common experiences. Our communal insights and wisdom help to keep our wonderful artistic boats afloat.
Much was discussed yesterday. As promised, I am compiling a list of those venues, publishers and organizations that could be excellent resources for us all.
Thank you so much Zelda for hosting us.
I know it was an extended stretch of time since our last meeting. I'll reach out again sooner and set up our next meeting when my psychic alarm clock tells me so!

Salon meeting, June 3, 2012, Karen Bellone
Thank you Karen for hosting us at your bucolic home on Sunday. In attendance were Karen, Phoebe, Judith, Sandy, Carolyn and our newest Salon member Mary Milelzcik.
Karen's work is luscious, haunting, beautifully crafted and heartfelt. I am so excited to have her passion, intelligence and warmth added to the chemistry of our group. It was wonderful to engage in the dialogue evoked by Karen's images, mirroring a different meaning for each person. The general consensus was to "keep going". I can still feel the crunchy parchment in my hands and feel the desire to run my hands over the luscious prints in Karen's book.
For those of you who missed the chance to see Karen's work, she will be meeting this Friday, June 9 with Craig at 1:00 at her house. Please contact me if you need more information.
As usual, it was fantastic to reconnect. We always walk away feeling nourished by the connections that we create when we are together. I feel that our group has been an important source of strength and support for my own practice and well-being.

- Our next meeting will be in July and will most likely be a connect and talk meeting. We are happy to host it, but will be open to any other takers.
- Please click on Mary's name above, to find out more about the interesting work that she is doing. Mary is a friend of Peggy's. She is also a grant writer, has been a curator for many years and will bring another perspective to our group. Her art website is in process and I will post it as soon as she is ready to share it. She described her work as combining painting and photography. We are looking forward to Mary's new voice in our Salon.
- Peggy sends her regrets as she's trying to balance her life and her studio time. I wanted to use this chance to say "come when you can, we adore you and your input and we'll come to you!" This goes for everyone who can't always make it. This isn't an obligation, it's a love-fest.
- Zelda, I never posted after your last meeting as I was trying to re-gain my sanity and then too many big life events washed over me. I just wanted to say: I LOVE your work. Love it. It's like poetry. To quote the movie Swingers: You are so money and you don't even know it. If you've got it, flaunt it.
- Karen's lab that she mention in Culver City: Bowhaus.
- Judy brought up the artist Odd Nerdrum. She felt that Karen's newer work was evocative his enigmatic paintings.

Wow, pretty far away. Have a great and productive summer. Keep your eyes open for interesting people for our group. Also, I have not forgotten about the group show. Sorry, that wasn't addressed at the last meeting.
July 10, 2011 My studio visit: Round two
I feel extremely grateful for the time spent with our group last week. After almost three years, I feel that this process is still so vital and nourishing. It was truly a "circling of the wagons" time for my thought process. It's also nice to have a little heat raised under my burner. Deadlines can be helpful.
My ideas became more solid and clearer to me, knowing that I was to be presenting to a group of intelligent and caring people (AKA: YOU!)
It was a great opportunity to articulate my ideas and identify the lingering questions, pertaining to this stage in the work.
I want you to know that your suggestions and opinions felt valid and validating. I heard what you said and have taken it in: in all of their variety. It is a wonderful feeling to have this group, a lifeline to artistic dialogue and genuine support. I love the unique reactions and honestly respect where those thoughts are coming from. Your life experience feeds mine.
This visit came just at the right time for me. You were there just when I needed you.
Thank you for showing up physically (Sunday in Malibu) and thank you for showing up for me in such an important way.
I feel great.

Studio visit with Clinton Bopp

What an exhilarating experience. What an overwhelming amount of work.
Congratulations to Clinton for his absolutely massive amount of art created in a relatively short time (in terms of years on the earth, that is).
Present at the meeting: Phoebe, Clinton, Peggy, Carolyn, Judith, Clara Llano and Madeline Fraser.
Clinton hails from New Zealand and has been living in LA for the past 12 years.
His life story is fascinating and informs his work throughout. His father was a Navy Seal. Clinton was raised to follow in his footsteps. He learned to survive in the wilderness and was exposed to an interesting hybrid of kiwi, Mawri and US military culture. He followed his artistic spirit and moved to LA. He was homeless for a while but used his survivor's instincts to create a life. Introduced to and exposed to Mexican art and artists and mesmerized by the "street" life of LA, he relocated to downtown. There he spent a decade immersing in and documenting his urban life. Trust me, he's seen a lot. He challenged himself to use those "survival" skills in the thick of downtown, before the Lakers stepped foot near the future hip zone.
That was then. Now he lives in a gloriously bucolic guest house, with jacuzzi, sauna and two pigs near his front door. But he's the sanest madman artist there is.
His fine art is a fantastic amalgamation of his roots in nature, his urban soul, Mawri influences, respect for the cosmic with an eye on the street. He's a whiz of a painter. Mural after mural, painting in every conceivable style for his movie production work.
His installations are engulfing environments filled layer upon layer of narrative, mystic and literal street elements.
He's working on a show in November at Highways. Don't miss it.
Judith described his work as "operatic". The rest of us just dropped our jaws at the sheer output of excellence.
I know that this is an extremely busy time for our academic friends. We missed you and we are sorry that you missed Clinton's visit.

Recent Meeting, January 23, 2011
Our most recent meeting was at Zelda's house. Despite the sad news of Kate and Tom's departure from the group, we carried on with renewed resolve!
In a small bout of the 'glass possibly being half empty' (some culture shock and just having returned from 5 glorious weeks in Mexico may have had some influence on this), a part of me expected everyone to being jumping ship. But alas, no! It was fantastic to be together, talk and discuss our future.
Here's what was discussed:
Our Group Show
As the basic democratic policy of the group is "you snooze, you lose", those who participated in the dialogue discussed and came to a consensus for our first group show. Everyone who sent in or brought in ideas had an open forum, no judgement. We threw around all of the ideas and agreed that we wanted to have a theme that was open-ended, malleable and relevant to the work that we do.
Here it is: Short Stories
We are encouraging creating new work for this, one to three pieces. If the older work is pertinent, great. A little more, a little less, OK.
As many of us are work-horse, labor intensive types of creatures, we need some time.
Here's the structure:

We are looking to add about three more interesting and viable people to the group.

- June - We'll have a State of the Union style update on where our pieces are. Step one. Get started thinking now, though. Start creating for this.
- We'll determine a realistic date for completion.
- We'll discuss gallery possibilities. We liked the idea of being able to take this show to a few venues. DIY spaces, Phantom galleries. We really want to present it in a fresh light and want to resist the comfort of a space that feels tired or "faculty show-ish".
- Since it is called Short Stories, we loved the idea of printing a booklet with our work, info and writing that would enhance the work. We were into all of the new printing possibilities for this. It also nice to have something to take away. We want a book.
OK, so this is the nature of a group. People come and people go. But please don't go!
We are looking to add about three more interesting and viable people to the group.
Some thoughts:
- Serious artists who are truly committed to their art and creating and a career.
- Negativity, downers and super critics... not good candidates.
- Whoever joins is stepping into an already lovely group of people with a group show on the horizon.
- Ask around. Ask curators, gallery owners, other artists who may have friends, etc.
- Man power. A few good men would be nice. Looks count for more than 50 %. Or more. Just kidding, but more men would be great.
- We're not in a rush. But get the word out. Quality first.
- Zelda was excited the John Frame was coming to the Huntington Gardens/Museum. She said that could use your B of A card for free entry.
- Peggy wrote and said that she liked the idea of an annual group show called Salon LA 2011. I think you all received this e-mail with the details of her view. Interesting idea that we'll bring up at the next meeting.
- This weekend is the LA Art Show at Barker Hanger at the SM Airport. That might not be the exact name. I never remember the title, exactly.
- AND! Craig's show in Mexico was a GIANT success! Fantastico!

Cherie's Studio Visit
Thank you so much, Cherie for letting us in on your beautiful world of insects, birds, fruits, candies and ideas. We are sorry to have missed a few of you (Zelda, Tom and Kate, I believe were the only ones absent).
Cherie walked us through her vision of her project that resides in her mind and will hopefully be ignited to bust out into the real world very soon. I love your idea of using the insect display case, but on a larger scale. Part natural History Museum, part Joseph Cornell and very dream-like.
Cherie displayed her illustration work through the course of her career, showing finished product as well as originals. Such beautiful craftsmanship. Incredible precision and eye for detail.
It was lovely for us to be together. John, you were a charming and restrained host, truly allowing Cherie to have the spotlight.
We were all excited with your proposal. I hope that the Salon helped you with direction and motivation!

We are heading into our third year together!
Or I could say, we have just completed our second year together.
But, I am looking forward.
It was wonderful and soul-nourishing to be together on Sunday at Zelda's. Thank you for always saying Yes to us, Zelda. John and Cherie are on the mend and have used up their allotment of sick days for the Salon. The rest of you folks were missed. Truly.
We used the time to reconnect after being apart for the whole summer. We spent the first hour and a half catching up, each person getting a turn to share with the group.
The second "half" was devoted to envisioning our future. Now that almost everyone has had a chance to be visited, viewed and worshipped, we're ready for a deeper dig. The universal consensus was that we'd like to take our studio visits to another level. We seem to have established a level of trust and respect with each other. We had our retrospectives. Now, we can use these visits for more focused conversation. We can designate the direction of the visits and seek whatever we feel we need in our respective journeys.
Some people wanted to steer away from technique, unless it was pertinent. Others are looking for thematic connections. This will continue to evolve. Sandy says enough already with the painters! Someone suggested we get another man in the group.
And yes, we want to set a tangible goal of showing together. Here's what we discussed:

- It has been established that we will have no problem finding a venue for the show (I declared it, so it will be).

Looking forward to the new season
It seems like an eternity since we've all been together. I am so looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday, September 19, at Cherie's studio visit.
Forever connected the the school calendar (despite no longer being connected to a school), this always feel the like the beginning of a new year. I hope we will continue our momentum and see what we can bring to the Salon and what the Salon can create for us.

Craig and I saw some great exhibits yesterday and I thought I'd share them:
Larry Pittman at Regen Projects
He just takes my breath away. Check out both Regen Projects galleries. His new paintings are at the new space and a survey of works on paper (presented in a very trippy way) are at the older space.
Alberto Burri at the Santa Monica Museum of Art
Amazing Italian artist who spent some time in Los Angeles. Under the radar and ahead of his time. Some of the uses of his materials reminded me a little of the way Lee Bontecou used burlap and charred-looking materials. As Shelley Duvall said in Annie Hall, it was "Trans-splendid".
Nancy Jackson at Rosamund Felson
We are both such big fans of Nancy Jackson. We own one her pieces from her debut show at Rosamund Felson. Her work is honest, beautiful, idiosyncratic and let's you in on her unique sense of journey. This work is both very dark (nightmarish, detailed, cross-hatched drawings and paintings) and literally very light (spiraling mobiles cut from delicate sheets of paper). And at times humorous.
She moved to the east coast last year. That'll mess with your head...
So, sorry I've been out of touch. Our dog is recovering from knee surgery. We've been home with him for weeks and I've generally had my head in the foggy regions of the never ending quest for trans-splended-ness.

Craig and I saw some great exhibits yesterday and I thought I'd share them:
Larry Pittman at Regen Projects
He just takes my breath away. Check out both Regen Projects galleries. His new paintings are at the new space and a survey of works on paper (presented in a very trippy way) are at the older space.
Alberto Burri at the Santa Monica Museum of Art
Amazing Italian artist who spent some time in Los Angeles. Under the radar and ahead of his time. Some of the uses of his materials reminded me a little of the way Lee Bontecou used burlap and charred-looking materials. As Shelley Duvall said in Annie Hall, it was "Trans-splendid".
Nancy Jackson at Rosamund Felson
We are both such big fans of Nancy Jackson. We own one her pieces from her debut show at Rosamund Felson. Her work is honest, beautiful, idiosyncratic and let's you in on her unique sense of journey. This work is both very dark (nightmarish, detailed, cross-hatched drawings and paintings) and literally very light (spiraling mobiles cut from delicate sheets of paper). And at times humorous.
She moved to the east coast last year. That'll mess with your head...
So, sorry I've been out of touch. Our dog is recovering from knee surgery. We've been home with him for weeks and I've generally had my head in the foggy regions of the never ending quest for trans-splended-ness.

Saturday, April 24, 2010: Carolyn Vosburgh
Carolyn, what a spectacular and outstanding presentation of your work! It was so exciting after all this time (over a year and a half of meeting) to finally get to see what you create. As you can tell from all of the swooning, it was clear that your work was well-received by all.
Congratulations on a full, rich body of work. You are prolific.
All you need is a large space to display and you'll be ready for a mid-career survey.
Thank you for all who attended and sending out love to those who didn't. You missed a good one.

Seven Arrows Masquerade Festival
Here is a link to see some photos of our (Phoebe and Clinton) school's 2010 Masquerade Festival performed at the Broad Theater in Santa Monica. Those giant costumes are hanging on either side of the stage. Clinton and I are at the end of the photos.
It was wonderful and exhausting! The kids were fantastic.
La Casa del Tunel
Here are some photos that Peggy wanted share. She will be participating in a show in Tijuana in April at La Casa del Tunel. Her friend Clark Fox (we met him at Sandy's) will also be in the show.
