Next Meeting: Sunday June 7, TBD

I need your feedback!
Is there an artist ready to go next time?
I know that some of you are feeling like you need a little more time, or until the end or middle of the summer before you will be ready for your turn. That is completely understandable. I know there are teachers who are needing and craving some studio time.
Here is a thought: If no one is quite ready, lets meet and use it as a time to discuss some of those issues that are floating around in our heads. I know I could use more conversation.
Please let me know, if or when you think you'd like to do your studio visit (It can be months from now). We'd be happy to host the meeting here.
Also, all of you, please send me a list of topics that you'd like to discuss at a non-studio meeting. You can either put it in the comments section or send it as an e-mail. I will post these as a complete list and then we can decide.
Thank you all for being a part of this Salon. It is feeding me in wonderful ways.

John's studio visit

Thank you John and Cherie for opening up your house, studio and kitchen to us all. Once we all finally arrived, it turned out to be another joyful ride with the Salon.
It was nice having Steve Clark as a guest that day.
We missed those of you who could not make it.
Here are the topics that we covered before John's studio visit:

-We checked out the beautiful images and fine printing quality of Zelda's book. She used Blurb for this project. She is also exploring Lulu for book making. Kate mentioned Cafe press for reproducing images on items, like t-shirt, mugs, etc.
-Reminder: GYST class on artist statements in next Saturday, May 16.
-Zelda announced an upcoming show (See entry below).
-We discussed the idea of the Stella Dottir group show being in September. I'd like to check out the vibe (or someone else can too) on one of the Art Walk nights.
-We want to talk with Beth and her husband Stu about doing a group show in October in one of the vacant stores.

John, I think it is fair to say that everyone had their jaws to the ground with admiration for your off the charts technical ability!
(Insert diminishing remark here!)
Since we got a later start, I know we didn't have time to address your more current work and newest projects with ample time.

I wanted to share with the group some of your post-crit thoughts. I hope you don't mind:

"You asked me several times what I hope to get out of this art salon.
My reply wasn't particularly articulate - I don't know of anything in
specific that what I want from this group, but I have already gotten
a whole lot more than I could have imagined. I had planned to show a
very sketchy idea of what this group has pushed me toward, but I
never quite got there this afternoon. I am working on a project that
seems to be taking me back towards painting and something quite
uncommercial, all because of some of the things you showed me at the
your session as well as Tom's, Beth's and Zelda's. Perhaps when you
all come to see Cherie's work I will have something tangible to
briefly show you.

In another regard, I feel that their is a whole lot that I should
have talked about today that the group might have found more valuable
- specifically, self promotion. Tom asked about it briefly, but I
didn't elaborate beyond the idea that Cherie and I always have too
much work to have ongoing promotions all the time. Over the last few
days, I realized as I was pulling artwork out of crevices that I
haven't looked into for decades, that I have a life time of
experience with self promotion and art reps in the commercial
illustration world, as well as fine art gallery experiences that go
back to San Francisco in the 60s, 70s and New York in the 80s. I
never really thought about discussing the fine art gallery subject
until I started trashing Julian Schnabel and admitting to my marriage
to crazy Lisa Adams. Perhaps we should try to have a potluck social
some day that addresses a planned agenda of topics that would benefit
everyone in a more specific manner. I feel that I have a lot to say
that might be useful to someone."

It is so nice to feel like the conversation is only just getting started. I know we all have so much more to say, question and debate. This will all be continued as time goes on, but it is wonderful to step into your work and get to know your artistic voice even better! Thank you!

Check out what Erin, an emerging artist, had to say about our last
workshop:
As an artist I have found it difficult to write about my own work, and
thought it would be helpful to have a professional review of my
statement. Seeing the add for a free statement review with my RSVP for
a GYST workshop, I jumped at the chance. Any expectations I had were
far exceeded by my reviewer. Tucker had not only burned me a disk with
his comments, but also sat down to review each sentence with me. His
comments were well thought out and came from a place of real art world
experience. I would recommend this service to any artist from the
confused to the professional! Thanks GYST!
